Hulaco Youth and Family Camp

Hulaco Youth and Family Camp is being developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for use by members of the Bessemer Alabama, Birmingham Alabama, Huntsville Alabama, Montgomery Alabama, Tupelo Mississippi, and Franklin Tennessee Stakes. The 135-acre recreational facility is located in southeast Morgan County, Alabama near the town of Hulaco. The land was purchased in November of 2005 and construction of the buildings began in April of 2006. While its primary purpose is to serve the Church's Young Women Camp program, it is also available for use by other Church and family groups when not in use by the Young Women.

Description of Facilities

Large Pavilion

The large pavilion has an enclosed air-conditioned area that houses a commercial-grade kitchen with the following features: large preparation island, 4-burner propane gas stove with grill and oven, walk-in cooler, two chest freezers, dry food storage room, ice maker, triple sink, mop-sink cleaning area, and ½ bath. Directly behind the kitchen is a large craft area. On one side of the craft area is a room with 4 beds w/ mattresses and full bath accommodations. Attached to the enclosed portion of the pavilion, just outside the kitchen, is a covered area with seating for 240 persons on folding chairs, 8' folding banquet tables, lights and ceiling fans, and a sound system w/ microphone and inputs for CD or cassette players. At the end of the outdoor area is a storage area for the tables and chairs so that the area may be used for other activities. The camp has one flagpole located by the pavilion (the camp does not provide a flag).

(Note: The kitchen is equipped with cooking and serving utensils. Users must bring their own dish soap, dishcloths, other cleaning items for the kitchen, napkins, dishes, eating utensils, and linens for the single beds. The camp provides paper towels, trash bags, toilet tissue, liquid soap in dispensers, brooms and mops for indoor cleaning, and brooms and hoses for outside cleaning.

Cabins

The camp has a total of 24 cabins.  Each cabin has 5 bunk beds to accommodate 10 persons. The cabins are arranged into 5 clusters, 4 with 5 cabins and 1 with 4 cabins. Each cluster of cabins has its own cooking pavilion.

Campers should bring their own pads and sleeping bags. Each cabin has a ceiling fan w/ light, two windows, and a door w/ screen window to allow for additional ventilation. There are no electrical outlets.

(Note: Heaters of any type (electric, propane, gas, kerosene, etc.) are not permitted.)

 Restroom Buildings

Two restroom buildings are located between the large pavilion and cabins. Each has 6 flush toilets, 6 private showers, and sinks with continuous hot water.

Each building also has a fully equipped handicap restroom with a separate entrance. During Young Women Camp, the brethren can use these restrooms.

(Note: The camp provides liquid soap in dispensers, paper towels, and toilet paper. Campers must bring their own bathing soap and other necessities. Glass containers should not be used in the showers and other restroom areas.)

Cooking Pavilions

Each cluster of cabins has one covered cooking pavilion with 2 propane hookups for grills (propane provided). There are 2 sinks with running cold water for food preparation and rinsing dishes. There are two storage rooms, each with shelves and a regular refrigerator/freezer.

(Note: Please bring all utensils, propane grill, supplies, and other equipment required to cook and serve your food, and to clean up afterwards. Utensils and equipment from the large pavilion are not to be removed and used at any other areas of the camp.)

Amphitheater

An outdoor amphitheater next to the large pavilion provides bench seating for about 300 that can be used for large-group programs and firesides. A portable sound system w/ microphone is provided.

Parking and Driving

Parking is limited. All vehicles, campers, and RV’s must be parked and used in designated areas only. One RV hook-up and a “clean-out” is provided.

All vehicles are to stay on the gravel roads. Riding in the back of pick-up trucks, trailers, outside of motor vehicles, etc. is not permitted.

(Note:  No motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s) are permitted at any time on camp property.  Bicycles are ok on gravel roads only.)

Rustic Camping

Several rustic camping areas are provided. Camping outside of any of these designated areas is strictly prohibited. All fires must be maintained in the campfire rings provided. Two port-o-potties will be stationed a short distance from the rustic campsites.

Camp Fees and Reservations

General Church funds were used to purchase the land and buildings. Except for any future capital expenditures, all operating expenses, maintenance, and future development of the camp will be paid for from the fees collected by those using the camp. Members can help reduce these costs and associated fees by providing maintenance and improvement service as individuals, families, groups, wards, and stakes.

Camp fees are set by a multi-stake camp committee and will be reevaluated on an annual basis. With the exception of Young Women Camp, fees must be paid when the camp is reserved. Checks are to be made payable to “Hulaco Youth and Family Camp”. A detailed information packet will be provided upon the approval of a reservation request. Once the enclosed forms affirming your acceptance of the camp regulations are received, along with your fee payment, the reservation will be made final.

The multi-stake camp committee will review camp policies and procedures annually. Reservations will be made using the following priority list: Young Women Camp, multi-stake activities, stake activities, ward activities, and family outings. It is possible that more than one group may use the camp at the same time. A second reservation will not be given to any group without the approval of the group holding the initial reservation. No other groups can use the camp when being used for Young Women Camp.
